If there’s one thing I love to talk about, it’s blogging. I love the business of blogging, and being self-employed has been truly invaluable to me. When I started this blog, I would never have known the direction that my life was about to take. From leaving to work to learning more about myself and my abilities, this blog has facilitated a life that I love. Here are five things that blogging has taught me about myself.

How to celebrate my skills
When you’re blogging, you can’t be shy about hyping yourself up, because you really need to be able to profit from your skills. Whether you’re a whizz at making funny graphics on Photoshop or you can write a 1000 word blog post in 10 minutes flat, you quickly learn to recognise where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and your strengths become your unique selling points that you use to get yourself more work and better results on your website. It is a very British thing to be modest about your skills, but blogging forces you to say – hey, I’m actually really good at this!
How to become a better businesswoman
Before I was a blogger, I worked in paid employment so I didn’t really have to think of things with a business mind. Blogging is my full-time job, which means that I need to take care of my own finances, schedule, tax payments, and rules and regulations. I have to stay up to date with the latest business information within my field, such as changes to advertising or privacy rules, and I have to look after my accounts and make sure I’m keeping the tax man happy every year. This means I’ve learned to become a businesswoman, and I’ve become an expert in many fields that I had no idea I’d be any good at.
How to recognise my limits
Being your own boss is fantastic for so many reasons, but it does have its downfall. One of the biggest problems can be separating your work and home life – a particularly difficult task when you literally work in your home! Through years of pushing myself and burning out because I want to work all of the time, I’ve learned to recognise when I’m reaching my limit and take time to look after myself.
How to recognise my worth
Sometimes it can be really uncomfortable to literally put a price on your work, but that’s something you have to get used to quite quickly in the blogging world. When your blog is your livelihood, you need to recognise the value of your content in situations such as creating a media pack for brands to decide if they want to work with you. Creating a media pack means deciding how much you’re going to charge people for featuring them on your blog, which can feel a bit strange when you’re not used to it. As more brands start to work with you, you definitely learn that your work has value and that you are worth more than you knew.
How to find my people
Something I never anticipated when I started blogging was that all of my best friends were going to live inside my screen! I have absolutely found my community through blogging. I love that I have learned to open up about my struggles because it has meant that I’ve been given fantastic advice and made friends with people in a similar boat, as well as helping other people who may be struggling.
