Planet X’s latest campaign, ‘Cycle to work scheme: Is it worth it?’ has shed some light on the success of the cycle-to-work scheme and the regions in England that are leading the way in its uptake. As more and more people across the UK look to ditch their cars and commute via bike, it’s clear that the cycle-to-work scheme is a valuable and popular initiative.

To create its unique scoring system, Planet X used data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) that looked at the different regions by population. They also considered the average monthly search volumes for the terms ‘cycle to work’ and ‘cycle to work scheme’, the pedal cycle traffic levels, and the number of adults who work full time that usually cycle to work across each region.
The results of this research are super interesting. Naturally, you might have already guessed that London would be the most popular and successful place for the cycle-to-work scheme, with the East of England coming in second.
In contrast, the North East, North West, and Yorkshire and the Humber regions showed lower levels of interest in the cycle-to-work scheme. The average monthly search volumes for the terms ‘cycle to work’ and ‘cycle to work scheme’ were far fewer in these regions. However, it’s worth noting that the number of adults who usually cycle to work in these regions was still significant.
So, is the cycle-to-work scheme worth it? From a financial perspective, the answer is a resounding yes. The scheme allows employees to get their bikes and equipment with no upfront costs as it’s taken from their paycheck monthly instead. Which can save a massive 26% to 40%!
However, the benefits of the scheme go beyond financial savings. Cycling to work can provide many benefits, both for the individual cyclist and for society as a whole. Here are five benefits of cycling to work:
- Improved physical health: Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise that can help to improve fitness levels, strengthen muscles, and boost overall health. Regular cycling can also help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
- Mental health benefits: Cycling can also have positive impacts on mental health, including reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s a great way to clear your mind before or after work and can help to improve mood and overall well-being.
- Financial savings: Cycling to work can save you money on transportation costs such as petrol, car maintenance, and public transport fares.
- Reduced environmental impact: Cycling to work is a sustainable mode of transport that produces no emissions, unlike cars and public transport. By cycling to work, you can help to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment.
- Time savings: In congested cities, cycling can be faster than other modes of transport, especially during peak traffic times. This can save you time and help to reduce stress levels associated with traffic jams and delays.
Planet X’s campaign has highlighted the success of the cycle-to-work scheme and the regions in England that are leading the way in its uptake. From financial savings to health benefits, there are many reasons why cycling to work is a worthwhile initiative.
