Sensory Activities To Explore With Your Child

20 June 2024

Sensory activities are an essential part of a child’s development, engaging their senses and helping them understand the world around them, according to this primary school in Buckingham. These activities stimulate sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, promoting cognitive, linguistic, and motor skills. Exploring sensory activities with your child can be a fun and educational experience that fosters creativity and strengthens your bond. Here are some exciting sensory activities to try with your child.

Sensory Activities

Sensory Bins

What You Need:

  • A large bin or container
  • Fillers: rice, beans, sand, water beads, or pasta
  • Small toys or objects: cars, animals, spoons, cups

How to Do It:

Fill the bin with your chosen filler and add small toys or objects. Encourage your child to explore by scooping, pouring, and sifting through the materials. Sensory bins provide a great way for children to engage their sense of touch and explore different textures.

Homemade Playdough

What You Need:

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

1 cup water

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Food colouring (optional)

How to Do It:

Mix the flour, salt, water, and oil in a bowl until a dough forms. Add food coloring if desired. Let your child knead and shape the dough, which helps develop fine motor skills and hand strength. The process of making and playing with the dough engages their sense of touch and creativity.

Nature Walk Sensory Scavenger Hunt

What You Need:

  • A list of items to find (e.g., smooth rock, pinecone, flower, leaf)
  • A small bag or basket

How to Do It:

Take a walk in a park or your backyard and have your child search for the items on the list. Encourage them to touch and observe each item closely. This activity stimulates their sense of sight, touch, and smell, and fosters a deeper connection with nature.

Sound Bottles

What You Need:

  • Empty plastic bottles
  • Fillers: rice, beans, beads, bells

How to Do It:

Fill each bottle with a different material and secure the lid tightly. Let your child shake the bottles and listen to the different sounds each one makes. This activity enhances auditory discrimination and can be a fun way to introduce concepts like loud and soft sounds.

Scented Painting

What You Need:

  • Watercolours or washable paint
  • Scented extracts (e.g., vanilla, peppermint, lemon)
  • Paintbrushes and paper

How to Do It:

Add a few drops of scented extract to each paint colour. Let your child paint as usual, and encourage them to smell the different scents as they create their artwork. This activity combines sensory experiences of sight, smell, and touch, making it a multi-sensory exploration.

Sensory Balloons

What You Need:

  • Balloons
  • Fillers: flour, rice, beans, water beads

How to Do It:

Fill each balloon with a different material and tie it securely. Let your child squish and squeeze the balloons to feel the different textures inside. This activity is excellent for developing tactile awareness and hand strength.

Engaging in sensory activities with your child is a wonderful way to support their development while having fun together. These activities stimulate their senses, enhance cognitive and motor skills, and foster creativity and curiosity. Try incorporating these sensory activities into your routine and watch your child’s sensory world expand.
