5 Autumn Activities To Try With Your Child

29 October 2024

As the leaves change colour and the air turns crisp, autumn is the perfect season to enjoy fun and memorable activities with your child. With nature transforming all around us and plenty of seasonal opportunities, fall offers countless ways to explore, create, and bond as a family. Whether it’s enjoying the outdoors or cosying up indoors, here are five autumn activities from this boarding school in London you and your child can try together this season.

1. Go on a Nature Walk and Leaf Hunt

Autumn is the perfect time to head outdoors and enjoy the stunning fall foliage. A nature walk or hike can be a simple yet exciting way to spend time with your child, while also teaching them about the changing seasons. Make the walk more interactive by turning it into a leaf hunt. Encourage your child to collect leaves in different colours, shapes, and sizes. You can even bring along a nature journal or a simple guidebook to help identify different types of trees and plants.

Once you’re back home, use the leaves for fun craft projects. You can create leaf collages, press them between wax paper to make leaf “stained glass,” or even turn them into leaf rubbings using crayons and paper.

2. Bake Seasonal Treats Together

Autumn is all about delicious, comforting foods, and baking is a great way to bond with your child while teaching them basic cooking skills. Fall flavours like cinnamon, apple, and pumpkin are irresistible, and there are plenty of kid-friendly recipes that your child can help prepare. From classic pumpkin bread to apple pies or cinnamon sugar cookies, baking together allows for a sensory-rich experience that includes mixing ingredients, measuring, and decorating.

You can also turn your baking sessions into themed activities. For example, bake pumpkin-shaped cookies and let your child decorate them with icing and sprinkles, or make spooky treats like ghost-shaped cupcakes for Halloween.

3. Visit a Pumpkin Patch or Apple Orchard

One of the most iconic autumn activities is visiting a pumpkin patch or apple orchard. These outings are not only fun but offer a chance for your child to experience fall’s harvest season firsthand. At a pumpkin patch, your child can pick out their own pumpkins for carving or decorating, take a hayride, and enjoy other seasonal activities like corn mazes or petting zoos.

Apple orchards are equally enjoyable, with the opportunity to pick fresh apples right from the tree. Many orchards also offer apple cider, donuts, and other fall-themed goodies. After your visit, you can bring the apples home to use in homemade recipes like apple crisp, apple sauce, or caramel apples.

4. Create DIY Fall Crafts

Autumn provides endless inspiration for seasonal crafts. Crafting not only encourages creativity but can also help develop your child’s fine motor skills. Some easy and fun fall craft ideas include:

  • Pumpkin Painting: If your child is too young for pumpkin carving, painting pumpkins is a great alternative. They can paint fun faces, patterns, or fall-themed designs using acrylic paints.
  • Pinecone Animals: Collect pinecones during a walk and transform them into adorable animals by adding googly eyes, felt wings, or pipe cleaner legs.
  • Leaf Wreaths: Use your collected leaves to make a beautiful fall wreath. You can attach the leaves to a paper plate or cardboard ring to create a colourful decoration for your front door.

For a more sensory experience, you can also try making autumn-themed playdough with scents like cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla. This not only stimulates their senses but gives them a new medium to create and explore.

5. Build a Cosy Indoor Fort and Read Fall Stories

As the days get shorter and chillier, spending time indoors can be just as exciting as outdoor adventures. Building a cosy indoor fort is an easy way to create a special space for your child to relax and enjoy some quiet time. Use blankets, pillows, and fairy lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Once the fort is ready, snuggle up inside with a stack of fall-themed books or bedtime stories.

There are plenty of autumn and Halloween-themed children’s books that celebrate the magic of the season. From classics like The Little Scarecrow Boy by Margaret Wise Brown to Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, reading together can spark your child’s imagination and help them unwind.

Autumn is a season full of possibilities, and it’s the perfect time to engage in meaningful, seasonal activities with your child. Whether you’re exploring nature, baking together, crafting, or simply cosying up indoors, these activities offer a wonderful way to create lasting memories and celebrate the joys of fall. So grab your scarves, your baking tools, or your craft supplies, and dive into these fun autumn activities that your child will love!
