How To Support Your Child Throughout Their Exam Revision

23 July 2024

Exams can be a stressful time for both children and parents. As a parent, you play a crucial role in helping your child manage this stress and perform to the best of their ability. Here are some effective ways to support your child throughout their exam revision period as recommended by this Oxford independent school.

Exam Revision

Create a Conducive Study Environment

Set up a quiet, comfortable, and well-lit area for your child to study. Ensure this space is free from distractions such as television, loud noises, and unnecessary electronic devices.

Make sure your child has all the necessary supplies, such as textbooks, notebooks, pens, highlighters, and any other materials they need. An organised study space can enhance focus and efficiency.

Establish a Study Schedule

Work with your child to create a realistic and balanced revision timetable. Allocate specific time slots for each subject, ensuring there are regular breaks to avoid burnout.

Identify the subjects or topics your child finds most challenging and allocate more time to those areas. Balancing study time across all subjects while focusing on weaker areas can improve overall performance.

Encourage Healthy Study Habits

Encourage your child to take short breaks during study sessions. A 5-10 minute break every hour can help maintain concentration and prevent fatigue.

Promote active learning techniques such as summarising notes, creating mind maps, teaching back the material, or using flashcards. These methods can enhance understanding and retention of information.

Working through past exam papers can help your child become familiar with the format and types of questions they might encounter. It also aids in time management during the actual exam.

Foster a Positive Mindset

Help your child set achievable and realistic study goals. Celebrate their progress and milestones to keep them motivated and confident.

Promote a positive attitude towards exams. Remind your child that while doing well is important, their worth is not determined by their exam results alone. Encourage them to do their best without putting undue pressure on them.

Teach your child relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or gentle stretching exercises. These can help manage anxiety and improve focus.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Ensure your child eats a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid excessive sugar and caffeine, which can lead to energy crashes and increased anxiety.

Encourage regular physical activity. Exercise can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall wellbeing, which is beneficial during intense study periods.

Emphasise the importance of getting enough sleep. Aim for at least 8-9 hours of sleep per night. A well-rested mind is more alert and better able to retain information.

Be Supportive and Available

Maintain open lines of communication. Encourage your child to express their feelings and concerns about their exams. Be a good listener and offer reassurance and support.

Offer help with difficult subjects or concepts. This might involve explaining something they don’t understand, helping them find resources, or arranging for additional tutoring if necessary.

Encourage a healthy balance between study and leisure activities. Allow time for relaxation, hobbies, and socialising. This balance is crucial for maintaining mental health and preventing burnout.

Supporting your child throughout their exam revision requires a combination of creating a conducive study environment, fostering healthy study habits, and maintaining a positive and balanced lifestyle. By being involved, encouraging, and supportive, you can help alleviate their stress and boost their confidence, enabling them to perform at their best. Remember, your role is to guide and support them through this challenging period, ensuring they know they are not alone in their journey.
