Master the Art of Escaping: Tips for First-Timers in an Escape Room

22 November 2024

Stepping into an escape room for the first time can feel a bit like diving into an unfamiliar game show – the clock is ticking, the puzzles are puzzling, and the pressure mounts with every second that slips away. It’s exhilarating, intimidating, and, above all, a challenge meant to be enjoyed. Whether you’re feeling excited or just a bit nervous, these tips will help you get the best out of your first escape room experience.

Understand the Goal of the Game

The core idea behind an escape room is simple – solve all the puzzles within a set time frame, usually an hour, to “escape” the room. But knowing what to expect doesn’t always make the job easy. You’ll face riddles, padlocks, physical puzzles, and who knows what else. The key to success? Keep your focus on making steady progress instead of worrying about that clock. The goal isn’t just to get out – it’s to have fun along the way.

Communicate with Your Team

Escape rooms are built around teamwork. Talking to your teammates is crucial. Shout out what you’ve found, say what you’re thinking, & listen when others do the same. It might sound simple, but effective communication really does make the difference between solving a puzzle or getting stuck. If you find a strange key, for instance, let everyone know. If you crack a code, shout it out. Half the challenge is connecting the dots – and there’s no better way to do that than talking.

Split Up, But Don’t Lose Track

There’s usually too much to do in an escape room for everyone to be working on the same thing all at once. It’s better to split up, let each team member work on different puzzles, and regroup when there’s progress to share. That said, you should make sure everyone is aware of what’s happening – no use finding a key if you don’t know there’s a lock that needs it. Keep sharing updates, even if you’re off in different corners.

Think Outside the Box (Literally)

Escape rooms are designed to challenge you in surprising ways. Sometimes, solutions are simple, & other times, they’re so obscure you’ll feel daft for missing them. Don’t get too fixated on one kind of solution – be prepared for something strange or unexpected. There might be a clue hidden in an unusual place, or a puzzle that involves a combination of two completely random items. Keep your mind open, think creatively, and don’t overlook anything. Often, it’s the least obvious detail that matters most.

Don’t Overcomplicate Things

Many first-timers fall into the trap of overthinking. Remember, escape rooms are generally made for anyone to enjoy, so they’re not designed to require advanced physics or abstract algebra. If you’re finding the puzzles overwhelmingly difficult, take a step back and consider a simpler solution. Sometimes, the answer is right there – you just need to take a deep breath and look at it with fresh eyes. When you feel stuck, it might help to call in another teammate for a different perspective.

Manage Your Time Wisely

You only have a limited amount of time, so managing that time well is key to escaping. Avoid spending too long on a single puzzle. If something isn’t working, move on & come back to it later with a clearer head. Divide up the workload and make sure each person has something to do – idle hands can cost precious minutes. If the game master gives you a hint, don’t be too proud to take it; they often know when you need a nudge to keep things moving along.

Stay Calm & Don’t Panic

Time limits can make even the calmest people feel a bit frantic. Don’t let the pressure get to you. The clock might be ticking, but getting stressed will only make it harder to think clearly. Keep breathing, keep moving forward, and keep working as a team. Remember that escape rooms are built to be fun challenges, not something to stress over. Whether you win or lose, it’s all about the experience and enjoying yourself with your friends.

Use Everything at Your Disposal

Escape rooms have all kinds of props – don’t ignore them. Everything in that room has the potential to be a clue, even if it doesn’t seem important at first glance. A random picture frame could hold a code, or a book might have hidden writing. Pick things up, examine them, and see what they might be used for. Just don’t be too forceful – it’s an escape room, not a demolition site!

The Hint System Is There for a Reason

It’s normal to get stuck. Even the most seasoned escape artists run into puzzles that leave them scratching their heads. Most escape rooms offer a hint system – use it when you need to. You might feel like asking for help is “cheating”, but these hints are there to keep the game moving & make sure you have fun. It’s all part of the experience.

Have Fun

Ultimately, the point of an escape room is to have fun. You might win, you might lose, but if you’re working together, laughing, and trying your best, then you’re doing it right. Sometimes, the thrill isn’t in escaping itself but in figuring out a particularly tricky puzzle, or having a moment of sudden realisation just in the nick of time. Whatever happens, make sure you take it all in, enjoy the challenge, & create some memories with your mates.

So, there you have it – your survival guide for your first escape room adventure. Follow these tips, keep calm, & embrace the chaos of it all. You’ll be out before you know it, or at least you’ll have a good story to tell at the pub afterward.
