4 Ways to Deal With Damp

4 April 2022

It can be troubling to find damp in your home, as it could be an indication that something is wrong. It’s important to deal with damp as soon as you identify it, because if mould spores begin to form then this can be hazardous to health and difficult to prevent from recurring. Don’t panic, though – there are a range of things you can do to treat the damp in your home and prevent it coming back again. Here are four ways to deal with damp.

damp

Disposable dehumidifiers

If damp is a small problem in your home, or you just cannot afford the cost of a large dehumidifier, there are small disposable versions that can be picked up for as little as £1 in any supermarket. They are small plastic boxes that are filled with absorbent beads, which are designed to suck the moisture from the air. They are not the most effective method of dealing with damp, but they’re a great way to manage it in a pinch.

Contact a professional

There are all kinds of tips and tricks that you can follow, but if you think that the problem might be bigger than you can cope with then it is definitely a good idea to contact some professionals. They can check things like your gutters to make sure that there are no leaks, or even install a damp proof membrane in your roof to prevent the problem from happening again once they have dealt with the damp. This will work by stopping the damp from moving down through your building, so if there are any leaks you can be sure that they won’t affect your household while they are being resolved.

Keep your windows open

For relatively small areas of damp, you can solve this by keeping your window open. Areas where damp might be likely to build up are kitchens and bathrooms, because there is lots of moisture and steam going on in these rooms. Steam in a poorly ventilated area has nowhere to go so it settles as damp in your home, but simply opening your windows each day can be a great way to let fresh air in and cut right through that damp.

Dry your washing outside

Though it might not always be possible thanks to the great British weather, its a really good idea to try and dry your clothing outside as much as possible. There are a few reasons that it is better to dry your clothes outside, but most importantly is that the moisture evaporating from your clothing as it dries is much better outside than it is inside your house. Drying your clothes outside also makes them smell much more fresh, and means you don’t have to deal with a cumbersome drying rack inside your home.
