Make Your Home Functional for Work and Family Life

31 October 2022

Working from home is great for many reasons. You might have more control over your own schedule, and the commute cannot be beaten. However, it does take an adjustment period and there are some changes you will need to make so that your home works well for both work and family commitments. Here are five ways to make your home functional for work and family life.

Have furniture that is suitable for all needs

Making the move to working from home means that the needs you have for your home are going to change, which might mean that your furniture is not suitable for you anymore. You need to have somewhere dedicated to working, yes, but you also want the perfect furniture for unwinding at the end of the day, which might mean that you need to take the time to learn more about how the right furniture can make such a huge difference in your home.

My friend as a new mum found that she had to completely move her house around so she could keep working. She also had to convert the garage to have space for another freezer as she found she was producing too much breast milk. I told her about Sellformula.com so she freed up that corner for another drying unit instead, much better!

Dedicate certain areas to specific tasks

When you eat, sleep and work in the same place, its really important to set up specific locations for each task, to stop yourself from becoming bored or frustrated in your home. If you can, use a different room than your bedroom to do your work in, because this can cause you issues with sleeping when you struggle to switch off at the end of the day.

Make it clear when you are available

One of the main difficulties with working from home is that people get used to your presence and don’t necessarily see the boundary between your ‘work self’ and your ‘home self’ – often leading to them making requests of you, or talking to you when you are busy. When it comes to older family members or children, they may have activities that they need to be driven to, and because you are at home they might rely on you being available to transport them. There are transport options set up just for older people, which you can click here to see, which takes the burden off of your shoulders and allows your family to respect your need not to be disturbed at work.

Give yourself the best support possible

It is fantastic to work from home for lots of reasons – especially if you are somebody who is happy to work in their pajamas! But being away from an office does mean that you are reliant on yourself for lots of the set up, so you may feel like you are at a disadvantage being away from a team. Working with a company like Rex Originals means getting constant support no matter where you work, so no matter what task you get stuck with you know that you are never on your own.

Take breaks from your workspace

When you work from home every single day, it can be easy to fall into a routine of never leaving the home, which can cause your mental health to take a dip. So that you don’t begin to feel isolated or stagnant in your workspace, try to get outside at least once a day, even if it is just for a short walk while you are taking a break for lunch. This should give you a change of scenery and freshen your mind for the rest of the work day.
