Exploring Moral Values With Your Child

30 September 2024

Raising a child is a big responsibility, but one of the greatest joys in life. Other than providing their basic day to day needs, it is the parent’s job to ensure their child is being raised with the right values. Teaching moral values is essential for guiding your child towards living life as a compassionate and responsible person. Continue reading as we look into a few ways to explore moral values with your child, inspired by the teachings of this private school in Surrey.

What are moral values?

Before we look into the different ways to explore moral values, it is important to understand what they are first and how they can benefit your child’s life. Moral values are principles that help individuals determine what is wrong and what is right. This includes honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility, empathy and fairness. Teaching these values early is essential to laying a solid foundation for your child to make better decisions throughout their life.

Lead by example

Children learn moral values not just from what they are told, but by observing the actions and attitudes of those around them. Concepts like fairness and kindness is something they begin to understand from a very young age. You can start teaching moral values through simple lessons that align with the stage of development they are in. For example, if your child is learning to share their toys, you can talk about fairness. If you ask your child about something and they tell the truth, you can reward them for being honest and explain the importance of telling the truth. Whilst these moments may feel small, they are opportunities to reinforce positive values.

Have open discussions

Remember, this is your child’s first time experiencing many things in life, so every experience that may seem normal to an adult, is very new to them. This is why it is important to have open and engaging conversations with them, as it allows them to voice their feelings in different situations, giving you the opportunity to listen and offer solutions. For example, if your child has witness a friend being teased at school, this would be a good chance to discuss empathy and the importance of standing up for others. Remember to first ask what they think the right way to handle the situation is and why. This alone allows children to develop a sense of responsibility.

Praise positive behaviour

One of the best ways to reinforce good behaviour is by praising your child when they demonstrate these moral values. Children are more likely to repeat positive actions when they feel encourage and are recognised for their efforts. At the same time, if they make a mistake, don’t forget to guide them through understanding the consequences of their actions and how to make better choices in the future.

Instilling moral values in your child is definitely an ongoing process and one that requires patience, empathy and open communication. Remember, the values you instil today, will help them grow into a compassionate individual one day!
